The Basics of Chimney Repair

Nothing warms up a home like a real fireplace, but the chimneys that go with them sometimes need professional care. Regular cleanings keep the insides of chimneys in good working order, but you might need chimney repair when the part protruding from your roof is the source of the problem. Read on to learn some of the basics of chimney repair.

The Basics of Chimney Repair

  • The parts of a chimney: A chimney’s structure is typically made from brick, stone, and mortar. This is covered on top with a chimney crown, which is made from cement. Chimneys can get damaged when moisture seeps in, but can also be compromised by catastrophes like earthquakes. Others are just badly built or show their age by developing cracks. The interior parts of the chimney are called the flue, liner, and flashing.
  • Safety first: If you want to repair your chimney, you’ll need to wear boots with gripping soles, plus a safety harness, safety helmet, gloves, and goggles. Some of the tools and equipment needed are a joint rake, a masonry chisel, a high-heat mortar, and a masonry sealer.
  • Remove debris and replace materials: Examine the chimney for deterioration and remove crumbling bricks, stones, and mortar from the chimney and cap. Then, you’ll need to replace everything with new materials. The caulking that surrounds the flashing should be redone, with a watertight seal.
